This is our story
Once upon a time (June 2023) a 14-yr kid (Niko Zografos) wanted to win a national essay contest by submitting a proposal on how to bring awareness of neurodiversity to fencing. When his mom (Maria) and her friend (Dr. Lana Krichmar) read the essay, a lightbulb went off and Neurodiversity in Athletics Foundation was born!
As two moms of fencers, both Maria Kalorides and Lana Krichmar, believe in the value of all the lessons children learn through sports, fencing in particular. After reading Niko’s essay, they are thrilled to partner with each other to make sports accessible to neurodivergent children, beginning with the sport of fencing!
While we strive to promote the awareness of neurodiversity in athletics, our mission is to bring athletics to neurodiversity. We are passionate about bringing sports to neurodivergent children, teens and adults in a way that is accessible to them. Our goal is to train experienced coaches to understand and develop awareness of the idiosyncrasies of neurodivergent vs neurotypical styles of processing information and to teach classes using modified and adapted approaches to fit the needs of the neurodivergent children.
We strive to create a fun, engaging and supportive environment in which to participate in athletics, while maintaining the rigor and integrity of the sport. It is our commitment to utilize professionals (Occupational or Physical Therapists, or Psychologists) in each class, in addition to trained coaches, in order to provide live guidance and support as needed.
We are starting our program with the sport of Fencing! Learn about our Adaptive Fencing Program here
